Hardcoding

Instead of hardcoding the list here, can we redirect to the Category "Mayors of Atlanta"? That list has all mayors, then we could delete this page. Otherwise I'll need to edit every mayor page's "succession box"

Oh well, I went ahead and added a link to the :Category: so people can at least see the full list. I just don't see a point to keeping this article jolomo
I think this list is still needed (though it should be completed) since the category doesn't give a chronological list. Thus, if someone were trying to find out who was the Mayor of Atlanta in 1958, she would have to look through every mayor in the category until she found William Hartsfield. Party?

The last editor (anon) tabulated the list and added party affiliation. While all of those folks he marks as Dems are generally known to be Dems, the Atlanta mayoral election is officially non-partisan. By listing a party, there's an implication the mayor was representing that party on the ballot when they were elected. Any thoughts? Autiger 05:00, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well that's interesting -- I didn't know that. I'm the one who made the table, by the way. Well I looked and looked for a source to back up what you say, and I found it in -- go figure -- the Atlanta city ordinances (Section 5-105: "...In all municipal elections conducted by or for the City of Atlanta, the names of all candidates shall be listed upon the ballot without party label"). So it's not just the Mayor. Again, interesting, and thanks for bringing it up. However, we all know that most politicians do have a party affiliation, and the party affiliation of the Mayors of Atlanta is interesting. That's what I was looking for when I first came to this page and saw that parties were missing. So I think the Party column adds something. We might add a note to the page that indicates that City of Atlanta election ballots do not list candidates' party. Oh, and by the way -- the code doesn't say that they don't have a party, just that they don't put it on the ballot. Readparse 04:47, September 13, 2005 (UTC)

Well! This would explain why a party affiliation is so hard to find from the historical record (really, there are primary sources from the 1940s where 3 "Democrats" are competing against each other). Perhaps, if it's important to you, we could label the column "usual political affiliation" or something?? Otherwise just leave it out. Jolomo 04:16, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I meant to add a similar example that in the last mayoral election the three major candidates were all Democrats. Since the effort has been made to find so many at this point however, I'd say that a notation stating the election is non-partisan would be sufficient. The affiliation is probably of interest relating to the future political careers of mayors that went on to positions with partisan races. Autiger 04:31, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
