I added this as sort of a "table of contents" for people coming off the South Australia page. I think having easy access to all the South Australian towns is useful, it's more convenient than sifting through categories anyway. I don't think it was claming to be a list of all South Australian towns, does moving it to "List of major cities and towns in South Australia" with links to existing articles only sound okay? - Diceman - now it is. The US, and to a lesser extent, Canada and the US, have articles on every single town within their borders. We're very far behind this, and a decent list to highlight what is missing is really important. If people want to find the major cities, they can read South Australia. It wasn't "List of all cities and towns in South Australia" so stick that in your pipe(s) and smoke it. I added the old list to the South Australia page, I didn't think it would fit at first but I tried it out and it wasn't as long as I expected (I did have to split it though). My problem with the page as it was related to it only containing some towns, and no indication of how they were selected. It did not appear to be selected based on "importance" or size, but only on whether they had Wikipedia articles, but there were only half as many in this list as in the category. If anyone knows where to find a list ranked by population, that would be useful to ensure the ones near the top all have good articles. Ambi and Cyberjunkie convinced me it was worth the work to make a longer list. Now the problem is that there are towns in the Adelaide Hills area that are not listed here or in the List of Adelaide suburbs. --ScottDavis06:11, 21 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This article is problematic, because no matter what it started as, it *appears* to be a list and as such is woefully incomplete. If we want a list of major towns and cities in SA then well and good. This article could be it. I'd prefer a bit more radical approach. Can we find a good set of statistics (maybe ga.gov.au would have them) which has a list of towns, settlements, cities, etc. in SA and can automate creation of minimal (town name, coordinates, postcode, link to source, stub notice, category) articles for SA towns that have no article yet. If it works for SA towns, we can possibly do it for other states too. Then the "Towns and cities in SA" category would be complete. What do you think? Do you know of such a statistical resource?
