Merger proposal
[edit]I suggest the Battle of the Planets (soundtrack) should be merged into this article as there no independent sources to justify a solo article. Dwanyewest (talk) 15:44, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
Not only profanity, violence.
[edit]The BOTP editing also removes sexist behavior, like scenes of Jun (Princess) being verbally dominated by Ken (Mark) and even slapped by him (second episode of "Jigo Killers"), and even more harshly by Joe (Ep. 56, "Bird Missile of Bitterness").
The editing also seems to cuts out culturally and racially sensitive material. For instance the "The Mysterious Red Sand" (Ep. 13) is missing in Battle of the Planets. The episode takes place in Africa, and the Galactor commander has a black face, with big, round earrings. Another example of this "Trachadon, the Dinosaur Skeleton" (Ep. 50) which takes place in the country "Inderia" (obviously based on India, more than merely in name). The Science Ninja Team makes remarks about the locals being rude, and dislike their hotel rooms. The brown-skinned police chief of the town is portrayed as incompetent, foreigner-hating and ungrateful for assistance. At the end of the episode, while he police chief is passed out, statements which he made are mocked by Ken. This episode, omitted from BOTP, is quite likely to be regarded as offensive by people of Indian descent and anyone else who is sensitive to that type of portrayal of anyone.
Scenes in which Galactor officers are ordered into kamikaze suicide are also deleted, even though they do not depict graphic violence.
The editing of Gatchaman to make Battle of the Planets alters the story lines significantly, not only by recasting them as being on various planets. For instance, in Gatchaman is an episode about a Galactor traitor on the run (Ep 46, "Gatchaman in the Valley of Death"). In BOTP (Ep. 39, "Giant Gila Monster") this is turned into some nonsensical plot that takes place on a planet called Zenos, about a man who is that planet's last survivor, and harmed by that planet's own water (because though he's from that planet, he's actually from another dimension and incompatible with regular H2O). This is an important episode in Gatchaman, because Ken befriends the Galactor defector and tries to save him. He also recognizes the dedication of the Galactor commander who performs his duty right to the end. For the first time, Ken recognizes that there is humanity in the enemy (and narrative statements are made to that effect). Also, an important elment in the episode is that, at the end, when he's the only survivor of the whole scene, Ken has an opportunity to retrieve the briefcase containing the Galactor secret which the man had been carrying with the intent of selling it to the ISO. But instead, Ken throws it into the canyon. That is an important statement about honor. Ken doesn't want to profit from the death of two parties who struggled over the item, for whom he has respect.

- No he doesn't. That briefcase was no good. It was shot full of holes. In Correct (talk) 04:28, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
