Names
[edit]Is anyone familiar with the official names of the characters? I'm only familiar with the fansubs and don't know if they are correct. Ladlergo 17:56, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
- Those names are correct in both the Japanese and English version. --Rebirth 19:35, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
Differences between anime and book?
[edit]Is there interest in a section dedicated to the differences between Gankutsuou and The Count of Monte Cristo? It could be split up by arcs, characters, or whatever else people think is appropriate. 14:57, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
I don't think splitting it up would be worth it. There's not a lot of content on the anime page anyway, so it could be added there. 11:08, 3 February 2006 (EST)
- I do think it would be worthy, instead. My problem is that I didi not read the book, although I have seen variuos representations and insipred work. And this is the best one so far. Somebody who has read the book and watched the anime carefully should start the section. Federico Pistono ✆ ✍ 09:17, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
- Not worth the effort. Gankutsuou is an interpretation of Dumas' concept, not his story or theme. There isn't nearly enough similarity to create a "differences" list. -- uberpenguin 01:09, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'm inclined to disagree. I've only seen the first four episodes so far, but this series feels much more like the book I remember (and my own imagination) than any other adaptation I've seen, and the pure plot (though it starts in the middle) seems much closer and more faithful than anything I've seen, despite the crazy sci-fi setting.--Lord Shitzu 21:16, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
- I've added some changes to the story section; I've read the novel as well, and saw the entire series, and the plot ends up being very different. I've broadly outlined some of these differences, as well as commented on the change in tone. I think that Uberpenguin is right, however, in that creating a "list" would be too much effort. Hopefully my addition is helpful. 66.82.9.65 12:25, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for doing that. Ladlergo 13:17, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, a little section explaining the differences would be a great guide. (Sunsetterxxx (talk) 12:02, 6 March 2008 (UTC))
Movie and Anime
[edit]Is it worth mentioning that it sticks closer to the story than the movie which came out in 2002?
- Could you please sign your comments with the four tildes to mark your name/IP and the date? Thanks. Ladlergo 17:57, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
- I think it's worth mentioning, yes. That movie was an abortion of the original story.--Lord Shitzu 21:16, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Pictures
[edit]Is it okay if I add pictures to the character profiles and also add a better picture to the main picture? --Rebirth 17:54, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
- Please read WP's image use policy before you add anything. Ladlergo 18:06, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
- Could I get help on adding comments to the pictures, the comments isn't my strong point...Plus the pictures seem to put the text off course...I still have more but just want to get approval that I'm doing it right. --Rebirth 02:02, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- Personally, I find that having more than two pictures makes the article cluttered. I suggest you look at other anime articles to see what people have done. Ladlergo 13:22, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- From what I saw most of them had pictures, but not of all the characters, plus they had more info so five or six pictures weren't shown at once. I thought I'd just put pictures of Count, Albert and Franz. Are those alright?--Rebirth 16:55, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- I think that's a good choice. I'm going to see if I can move them within each character's paragraph so it's a bit more obvious. Ladlergo 17:12, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- If you could get a better picture of Franz I'd appreciate it. Franz just looks too tense in that picture, I can't seem to get very good pictures of Franz by taking captures straight from the episodes either.--Rebirth 17:16, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

- I'm fond of these two: http://www.stranglers.net/gank2.jpg and http://www.comicdom.gr/pics/shinjuku/gankutsuou2.jpg
- The first one is used all over the place (official page, for one), but the second is more representational what the anime looks like. Both of them are brighter and would stand out more at the top of the page. Thoughts? Ladlergo 17:27, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- I like the first also but I thought it looked to pixelated when it was on the main picture, I have a full version of the second one, which is in the link. But if I had to choose from yours, I'd take the second one but the full version of it. But would you consider the Gankutsuou marking to be a spoiler of some sort? I was just wondering that when I glance at it again.
- http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/7185/img187gw.jpg --Rebirth 17:42, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- Crap, I just realised your version and mine are different, but whatever, you can choose whichever you like. --Rebirth 17:41, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- Your version is certainly official, so we should probably go with that one. It should be shrunk a bit so it doesn't throw off the page, though.
- Given that the marking shows up in the second episode (and plenty of promotional art), I don't consider it a spoiler. Ladlergo 17:59, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- This was the best I could get it to. Is this alright? http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/2169/smallercountalbert4fp.jpg --Rebirth 18:18, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- ...I was just trying to figure it out myself, and you uploaded it. I fixed the tags, and now all I have to do is figure how to pull what I just put up. Ladlergo 18:36, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

- I can't figure out whether promotional images are allowed to be at the same res as they are on an official site. If they are, we should keep mine and delete yours, and just use the wiki tags to compress it for the article. Ladlergo 18:42, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- I don't care, as long the page still looks good. But what's the problem with it being the same resolution as an official site? You stated the author and I gave the link, so wouldn't it be fine? --Rebirth 18:50, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- "It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of promotional material" is part of the tag. That's the part that confuses me. I've taken it to Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags in the hopes that someone can explain exactly what's meant by that. Ladlergo 19:02, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, that doesn't make much sense. But I'm guessing it's alright since the tagging Bot hasn't tagged the picture for problems or anything. --Rebirth 16:52, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- I've changed it to reference the official image. I don't believe the original image can be considered "high-res" per WP's policy (it's only 637x400, not even big enough to use as a wallpaper 5 years ago), so I think it's ok. If no problems come up, we should nominate the smaller image for deletion. Ladlergo 18:08, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

What can I/We add?
[edit]Anything new that we can add? I added a little bit about Beauchamp because he's a somewhat main character. I wanna see if this can become a GA Class because well, Gankutsuou has been one of the best animes created. <_<
- I'd suggest working on a section that covers the differences betwen the anime and the novel. Ladlergo 20:05, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- I started the basics of that section in the "story" section (before I had a user name), but I agree that this could be an independent section, or at least a full subsection of "story." The story section itself could easily be made far more in-depth. Other than that, what do these "GA Class" articles have that this one doesn't? That might be an excellent place to start. Debray is Dupré
[edit]The Anime News Network is incorrect. Lucien Debray is officially Lucien Dupré. The Japanese credits for Lucien is ドプレー, which is DoPuRē. Since it is Pu, it can't have a B since they could have written it as Bu instead (I do know enough Japanese to know this.) The possible cause of this difference is that the creators chose to convert some of the names from the novel for the anime. - Alex anaya 18:43, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'm really not going to accept that right now. Even in French, the novel calls him Debray, and Japanese transliterations are not known for their unfailing accuracy. However, I will ask people who own the English subbed dvds. Ladlergo 21:14, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- The official artbook, as well as the official English subs, write his name as "Lucien Debray". Not "Dupré". Ladlergo 22:15, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe it was just a small typo in the credits; the difference between "Pu" and "Bu" is only a tiny accent mark (small circle for "Pu" and two small strokes for "Bu"). At this font size, I can't see the difference. It's a very minor thing. If it's a mistake on our side of the Pacific, it's almost like mistaking "R" and "L" in Japanese words. 66.82.9.90 22:27, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- Jin Domon as Lucien didn't make the transition from character list to voice actor table. Haydée or Haidee?
[edit]From all the magazine articles I have on Gankutsuou, they say Haydée. Where does the name Haidee come from? ...Because I'm pretty sure it's Haydée... >_> --Rebirth 20:08, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- http://community.livejournal.com/gankutsuou/345722.html Here are all of the names as listed in the Japanese artbook. The official English page also lists her as Haidee (no accents). Ladlergo 21:07, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- If Haydée is given in magazines (which ones, btw? I'm curious), then I have no problem listing both. Ladlergo 21:09, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- Haydée is the name of the character in Dumas' text. I assume Haidee is the romanji way of spelling ハイデエ, which is how the Japanese would spell (and say) the original name. In the fansubs I watched, the character's name was spelled Haydée, I think. Archaeo 66.82.9.53 21:21, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- I will point out that, by definition, fansubs are not official. Geneon, the official US distributor, chose to use Haidee in their translation
- I had the NewType magazine from back in '04 and a German magazine called "Animecraze", they both listed it as Haydée. But the original Count of Monte Cristo book refers to her as Haydee...I used to like collecting the Gankutsuou sections. >_>; --Rebirth 18:56, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
- ...So which is it? <_< --Rebirth 18:47, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- We can always list both. That's what I've done for Beppo/Peppo, as both spellings have been put out by official sources (one US, one Japanese). Ladlergo 22:42, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Is it worth mentioning as trivia that the english voice actors for Albert and Haydée also worked together in Eureka 7? Alberts voice is portrayed almost identically as Renton's as is Haydée's to Eureka. I guess it just stands out to me given the many similiarities between the characters of Albert/Renton. Gankutsuou Movie?
[edit]Someone told me that there was going to be a Gankutsuou movie, I search it up and found this. Can anyone else confirm this before I actually put this into the wiki? --Rebirth 01:32, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

- This rumour is unconfirmed, as well being possibly false or speculation. There has been no news or reference of such a kind from any official or respected/verifiable source (such as Anime News Network, etc.), and as such cannot be added into articles per Wikipedia:Verifiability. ···巌流? · Talk to Ganryuu 01:50, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

What's the gankutsuou?
[edit]can somebody add a paragraph or something explaining what the gankutsuou is? maybe including it in the characters list since it's a different entity from edmond dantès (edmond dantès + edmond = the count of monte cristo) and it's a key element in the plot. I think there was an explanation of the gankutsuou in one of the episodes of the series. it's some sort of demon for what it seems... (Sunsetterxxx (talk) 12:02, 6 March 2008 (UTC))
- You have been graced, hopefully they'll keep this segment on the main page Murakumo-Elite (talk) 07:22, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Comments for improvement to article.
[edit]The article does seem a bit short at the moment, here are some comments for further improvement, see also WP:MOS-ANIME:
- Convert the existing characters section to prose, as opposed to a embedded list. Per WP:SS this section should be about twice the length of List of Gankutsuou characters's lead.
- Better yet, this section can often be integrated into the plot section, see this guideline. I am aware that it is not currently specified on WP:MOS-ANIME, but we have had success in applying it.
- The article requires a production section.
- Some sections are still very short (e.g. Anime, Manga, Music, Reception). Expand sections to at least 100 words each.

Classical music?
[edit]It says in the article that there are a number of examples of Classical music in the anime, but every example listed is a Romantic piece, not a Classical one. Furthermore, the story of the original book takes place during the Romantic era. Is there any evidence that the show contains Classical music at all? It's been a long time since I've seen the show, so I don't want to go changing things on a whim....
