Measurement

[edit]

The lack of mechanisms by which culture can be modelled has severely hampered social science research to date. Why then is there a desire to delete the section on measurement? Is there perhaps a fear amongst social scientists that modelling & measurement will be an end to the endless, and arguably pointless debate regarding what is, or what is not culture?

Copyediting this disaster

[edit]

I've reduced the bloat by half, but it's still mostly academic/consultant nonsense. More deletions to come. That said, I'd appreciate your feedback and will happily fix any errors I've made that you tell me about. Cheers! Lfstevens (talk) 16:26, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Missing connection to the real world

[edit]

We are in the middle of an era of huge cultural change within many organizations, none of which made it into this article. I am not an SME and so am not the one to add it, but here are some examples that would make such connections and make the piece a far more interesting and relevant read:

- Ivies: school spirit/merit/honesty/honor/free speech => cheating ok/equity/BDS/R2S => defunding pro-Palestinian student groups

- Google: "don't be evil" => equity, etc./Damore incident => focus on mission

- X: equity/work-life balance/"misinformation" => hardcore/freedom of speech

- US military: honor/achievement => DEI

- nonprofits: mission => internal purity => ??? [1]

Separately, need to talk about:

- How have typical cultures evolved over time? E.g., many companies moved from tight dress codes to casual Fridays, which reflects a general loosening of culture. Many organizations have changed from externally focused to internally focused, in some cases losing sight of their missions. How has the shift in balance of workers towards women and other minorities affected culture?

The difficulty with examples is finding reliable sources that discuss them. I'll see if I can find something about culture change over time.Psyc12 (talk) 12:44, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural equilibrium

[edit]

Cultural equilibrium, according to okpara David ikemdinachi , would be a state where a person can maintain their own cultural identity while also being open to learning about other cultures and incorporating aspects of those cultures into their own life. It's almost like a cultural "sweet spot" where a person can maintain their sense of self while also expanding their horizons.

So in a way, cultural equilibrium is like cultural "goldilocks zone," where a person can find the "just right" balance between maintaining their own culture and learning from others. 102.91.4.55 (talk) 11:47, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. Examples? Lfstevens (talk) 01:30, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
