I have a BSc in Computing Studies from the University of East Anglia, where I was also involved in the student television service and was for a time a student member of the Royal Television Society. Graduation followed, and the need to earn a living saw me working as a computer programmer for British Rail and its privatised successors for more than 20 years. 2002 wasn't a very good year for me, as early on I was made redundant, and towards the end of the year my 80 year old mother was taken seriously ill with heart problems, though she improved for a while, but sadly now (July 2007) has passed away. While I was still working in the rail industry, I was a member of the executive committee of the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association of Britain and Ireland, and an employee director of my employer's share ownership trust company. I've also been active in my local branch of the Labour Party. Since 2006 I've been working in the oil industry, but I’m planning on retiring in mid-2023. Interests: History, stamps and coins, politics, science fiction.

10/10/2003: Became a sysop on English Wikipedia, having been one on Welsh Wikipedia since about July. Thanks to everybody who supported my nomination.
On Wiki...
After discovering Wiki at the end of January 2003, I initially wrote mostly on the British railway system, the British coinage, British commercial television, and naval battles of the First World War, but over the years I've spread my interests all over the place and currently have nearly 5000 articles on my watchlist. I am easily distracted, so my train of thought tends to get derailed by another interest, but sooner or later I'll get round to completing everything I've started!
While trying to avoid editcountitis, last time I looked, in July 2022, I was the 4698th most prolific editor on the English Wikipedia, which seems a nicely obscure position to be. I appear to have dropped around 1600 places since the last time I looked, nearly 6 years earlier, and 3600 places in 14 years, largely due to me having written about most of what I have any expertise of!

Spoken Barnstar
Spoken Barnstar for your excellent work in creating spoken Wikipedia articles. Your pace is steady and your tone is light. Your accent, besides being useful for pronouncing Welsh words, also brings character to the 'pedia. I hope you make many more. – Quadell 15:48, July 19, 2005 (UTC)
Thank you for your help on the David Beckham talk page. Regardless of the final outcome, I was feeling swamped by all the new "editors" that had decided to gang up on me, and I was seriously considering leaving the Wiki project (wheter that would have been a good thing I'll let others decide), so thanks for the help Darkson(Yabba Dabba Doo!) 00:15, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
