I removed the second picture from the page, because it showed the same tree as the taxobox. Burschik 07:54, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Relation of cork to bark

[edit]

It is clear that the cork grows on the tree as a sort of bark, but cutting the bark of a tree in a ring around it usually kills that tree, so it is not clear how cork can be repeatedly harvested from one tree. It would be nice to have some elaboration on this point. How are multiple harvest taken from one tree if the cork is bark. Is there secondary bark underneath the cork? Good question. You are right that this would normally kill a tree and also that there is a secondary layer of bark underneath the cork. Need to find some references however. Smartse (talk) 10:22, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've made some changes - it seems only the cork cambium is harvested but the other layers of bark are left. Smartse (talk) 13:29, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Going to add a commercial use section shortly; any suggestions? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.249.121.38 (talk) 01:11, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"male cork"???

[edit]

Please explain why the first cutting of cork from a tree which is understandably referred to as "virgin" can also be called "male cork". Are further cuttings called "female cork"? I know nothing about this subject but I am curious where this terminology comes from. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.71.8.71 (talk) 06:08, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
